The Great Lake Concerto

One month from today will be the world premiere of my new piece, The Great Lake Concerto, a double concerto for two percussionists and symphony orchestra. The premiere will take place at Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre with soloists Ed Harrison (Principal Timpanist of the Lyric Opera) and Vadim Karpinos (Percussionist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) conducted by Emanuele Andrizzi with the Chicago College of Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra.

“The Great Lake Concerto” serves as a powerful ode to water conservation and the city of Chicago. Composed for my former percussion teachers Ed Harrison & Vadim Karpinos, the concerto not only showcases the technical prowess of the percussionists but also resonates with a message about the interconnectedness of communities and their natural surroundings. The concerto explores the symbiotic relationship between humanity and water, drawing inspiration from Lake Michigan, which stretches over 22,406 square miles and serves as a lifeblood for Chicago.

The majority of the work on this piece was very fast. I had between August and December to write the full 30 minute concerto. I wrote a lot at the piano and then entered in and orchestrated in Dorico. I’m working on a behind-the-scenes video, similar to what I did with A Light Divided.

In the meantime, I hope you join me on February 5th at Auditorium Theatre! Tickets are FREE and a virtual broadcast will be available on YouTube.
