New Music for 2022

Lots going on this year with new music, even though the year is about halfway done! Never a slow moment here.

In addition to writing lots of new music for upcoming performances. I’ve done a number of arrangements and orchestrations over the last few months for Andrea Bocelli, the LA Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and a few others.

New Commissions

I have a few new commissions for concert pieces in the next few years which is fun to return to.

  • Double Concerto for Percussion – This double percussion concerto will feature Ed Harrison of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Vadim Karpinos of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This is a massive project and I’ll be able to share a lot more updates in the coming months, but for now, gear up for some rad percussion in 2024!
  • Percussion Quartet – I am writing a new piece for Medium-Advanced percussion quartet. This commission is aimed for upper high school and undergraduate level percussionists.
  • New Piece for Band – I’m thrilled to be working with some old friends from my old high school who have commissioned a new work for band. This piece will be premiered in the next year.

New Music for Dance – Ending the War on My Body

Ending the War on My Body production is in full swing! There was a hugely successful fundraiser, raising nearly $35,000 which was very exciting to be part of. Shooting has been ongoing over the last few weeks in NYC and we’ll be heading into post-production for the first one this week. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has once again made life difficult for productions and our schedule has been a bit wonky.

Film & TV

I’ll be working on a few new TV spots which is really exciting. Not much more to be able to share about it yet, but I’m really excited to work on some episodic material that will be released later on this year.

That’s about all the updates in new music for now. Life has been super hectic working on the Opera Festival of Chicago’s 2022 season. Covid has not made this summer any easier than the last, but we’re gearing up for the big finale this weekend of Verdi’s “Il Corsaro”. If you’re in Chicago, come check it out!

Tim Corpus is a composer with a genuine lyric impulse. He writes music that is at the same time challenging and appealing - which should be the ideal of any composer. He has a wonderful ear for sound and for shape. This is a composer with a real and important voice.

Tim Corpus' music is complex, original and steeped in tradition. His Three Pieces for Five Timpani is clearly an extension of the composers, such as Elliott Carter, that came before him. The pieces are challenging but fulfilling to learn and perform. Possibly the most important thing about Tim's timpani writing is that audiences will enjoy listening to his compositions. He is taking solo timpani writing to the next level.

The melodic gestures in Tim Corpus' masterful piece for strings, ``Breath``, are paced so that a listener’s respiration pattern aligns itself instinctively with the slow and even pulse of the piece.
