Place of Rest by Tim Corpus

Place of Rest is a relaxing album written to fall asleep to. Created with sleep in mind, the album follows a 90-minute sleep cycle. In the full album there is a continuous mix version without breaks between tracks.

The music was composed, performed, recorded, and mixed by Tim Corpus. Recorded at his home studio outside of Chicago, the project was done entirely in-house. The soundscapes were created with synthesizers, cello, guitar, and percussion instruments.

Deep Roots: The album opens with a textural world without time. Melodies, harmonies, and rhythms float past without clear definition. This is a place to relax, to forget about the day, to plant your roots for sleep. In composing this track I recorded several improvisations, overlaying them to create the textural environment.

4-7-8: Based off of the 4-7-8 breathing techniques popularized by Andrew Weil. This track is a space to calm down, to listen and focus on one’s breathing. First through the 4-7-8 process and then regular breathing, relaxing, and letting the day melt away. The track fades softly into sleep.

Through the Window: Sometimes sleep feels far away. You’re laying awake and it feels like you’ll never fall asleep. I sometimes imagine sleep to be like climbing through a window. This track follows the soft breathing of “4-7-8” as the listener climbs out the window, into an expansive soft dreamscape. A welcoming and relaxing environment.

An Ocean: It’s like floating. There’s a softness on the air. We’re not quite to the deepest part of our sleep cycle, but our breathing and muscles have completely relaxed and our body is floating.

Delta: We are now reaching deep sleep. The tuning has shifted to 432Hz and the synthesis drones float in parallel through a very reverberant space. The drones are accompanied by deep rolling bass drums and pink noise, to block out the distractions of the world that pull us away from a restful experience.
