The More You Know

September just flew by didn’t it?

Honestly, Covid-time is strange. It moves fast and slow all a once. My time has been spent working on a score for a new symphonic orchestra work which will be finished in a few weeks. This has been a unique project working in Finale again. It’s been about a year since I’ve been in the depths of Finale, so I forgot a lot of things. I have, however, updated my hotkeys and technology since the last time I was in Finale, and whoooweee is it nicer. Why does Finale have no sensible hotkeys? That’s a tale for another time…

In addition to the orchestra piece, lately I’ve been working on a secret unannounced project…yay. I’ll tell you all about it soon, real soon. I’m also doing more consulting work for a few artists and arts organizations. Fall is here and artists are excited to present their work. As much as you can, get out and support other artists!

In Chicago the Thirsty Ears Festival is happening this coming weekend from Access Contemporary Music. Get out and support new music! I’m usually out of town the weekend of this festival, but hopefully I’ll be able to make it this time…amidst a pandemic.

In other news, it’s GameSoundCon2020!

Created by the amazing Brian Schmidt, GameSoundCon is all about the different aspects of game audio. If you know me, you know I enjoy conferences. I especially enjoy conferences and sessions with real meat. I don’t care for presentations that gloss over big ideas, I want real in-depth information. GameSoundCon is one of the better conferences I’ve been to and there is a lot of great information out there for audio folks.

The More You Know

That phrase has always stuck with me (great job marketing department!). I try to take the time (and my hard earned dollars) to learn new shit all the time. Whether it’s for work, or reading a great book about the failures of our electrical grid system, it’s important to take the time. I know it’s hard, I really do. I get it, but it’s worth your while to keep pushing yourself to grow. Keep on learning. Keep that brain and those ears thirsty.

After GDC2020 I started a Discord channel for Composers & Sound Designers. It’s a place to learn, share, talk shop, and all around commiserate. It’s been awesome to meet other’s in the field from all over. If you’re interested in joining us, leave your Discord username in the comments and I’ll add you to the group.
